Permanent makeup lasts one to five years. Microblading holds about 12 to 18 months, powder and ombre brows 18 to 24 months, a 3D eyebrow tattoo two to three years, and permanent eyeliner and lip blush two to five years. Your skin type, sun exposure and skincare routine decide where you land.
You are spending real money on your face, so the fair question is how long the result actually stays. The answer is a range, not a number. Two women can walk out of our Dallas studio on the same afternoon with the same powder brows, and a year later be on completely different touch-up schedules.
Here is what drives that gap, treatment by treatment, and how to tell when it is time to come back.

Why does permanent makeup fade if it is a tattoo?
Permanent makeup is a tattoo. The FDA classifies it that way and treats the inks as cosmetics. What sets it apart from body art is depth and pigment. The artist works in the upper dermis, shallower than a traditional tattoo, and the pigments are built to break down. Your immune system carries the particles away slowly, which is why the colour softens instead of sitting there forever.
That fading is deliberate, and you want it. Faces change. The brow shape that flattered you at 35 rarely flatters you at 55. Pigment that softens on a schedule lets you adjust the shape and the tone as you go, instead of living with a decision you made years ago.
Treat permanent makeup as a maintained result rather than a one-time purchase. Budget for a colour refresh the way you budget for a good haircut, just on a much longer cycle.
How long do permanent eyebrows last?
Between 12 months and three years, depending on the technique. Permanent eyebrows in Dallas cover several methods, and they do not wear the same way.
How long does microblading last?
Around 12 to 18 months. Microblading uses a hand tool to place fine hair strokes, and those strokes are thin by design. Thin lines hold less pigment, so they soften first. On oily skin the strokes can blur into a shadow well before the 12 month mark, which is the single most common complaint we hear from clients who had it done elsewhere.
If your skin is oily or your pores are visible across your forehead, ask about powder brows instead of microblading. You will get a cleaner heal and roughly a year of extra wear for the same appointment time.
How long do nano brows last?
Roughly 18 months to three years. Nano brows use a single fine needle on a machine, which implants pigment more evenly than a blade. The strokes look similar to microblading but hold better, especially on combination skin.
How long do powder brows and ombre powder brows last?
About 18 to 24 months, and often longer with a yearly refresh. Powder and ombre techniques deposit tiny dots of pigment across the whole brow instead of concentrating it in thin lines. More pigment across more surface means slower visible fading.
A 3D eyebrow tattoo sits at the longer end, usually two to three years, because it layers shading under the hair strokes.
What we actually see in the studio: Two clients booked powder brows within a week of each other last year. One came back for a refresh at 14 months. The other still looked crisp at 26 months. Same artist, same pigment line, same technique. The difference was a nightly glycolic acid serum that the first client was applying across her whole face, brows included, and weekend tennis without a hat. Neither is a mistake exactly. They are just choices that cost you about a year.
How long does permanent eyeliner last?
Two to five years, which makes permanent eyeliner the longest-wearing treatment on the menu alongside lip blush. The lash line has fewer oil glands than the brow area and gets far less direct sun, so pigment holds. A thin lash line enhancement can look almost unchanged at three years.
Thicker liner and winged shapes are a different story. The outer edge of a wing sits on thinner, more mobile skin and shows softening earlier, usually somewhere around year two.
If this is your first cosmetic tattoo, start with a lash line enhancement rather than a full wing. It is subtle, it heals faster, and you can always add thickness at the perfecting session once you have seen it on your own face.
How long does lip blush last?
Two to five years, though the colour shifts most in the first 12 months. Lip blushing looks noticeably brighter for the first week, then settles to roughly 40 to 50 percent of that intensity once healed. That is normal and it is why we choose a shade slightly stronger than your target.
Lips fade faster than brows in one specific way. Lip tissue renews constantly, you eat and drink over it all day, and most people exfoliate their lips without thinking about it. So the pigment stays for years, but the vividness needs topping up sooner, usually every 18 months to two years if you want it to keep reading as colour rather than a soft tint.
What makes permanent makeup fade faster in Dallas?
Sun exposure is the biggest one. Dallas summers regularly sit above 100 degrees with long, bright days, and your brows sit on the highest plane of your face, catching light whenever you step outside. UV breaks pigment down directly. Once you are fully healed, a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher across your brows every morning is the cheapest thing you can do to protect the work.
Skincare actives. Retinol, glycolic acid, vitamin C and benzoyl peroxide all speed up cell turnover. Applied over your brows nightly, they will pull a year off your results. Keep them below the brow bone.
Oily skin. Excess sebum diffuses pigment and blurs fine strokes. It is the reason we steer oily skin toward powder and combo techniques.
Sweat and chlorine. Regular hot yoga, outdoor running and pool swimming all shorten the cycle, mostly through repeated moisture and salt on the skin.
Pigment shade. Light, warm and ash tones fade sooner than deeper ones. Blonde and light brown brows almost always need refreshing before dark brows do.
Your own body. Iron levels, thyroid medication, chemotherapy and a fast metabolism all affect how quickly pigment is broken down. This is why two people on identical routines still get different results.
Laser facials and IPL deserve a specific warning. If a laser passes over cosmetic tattoo pigment it can darken or discolour it, and the FDA has documented pigment shade changes after laser treatment. Tell your dermatologist or med spa where your permanent makeup is before any facial laser work, and ask them to shield the area. Our aftercare guide for permanent eyebrows covers the full list.
When do you need a permanent makeup touch-up?
Follow this schedule and you will never reach the patchy stage.
Six to eight weeks after your first appointment: the perfecting session. This is not optional and it is not a fix for a mistake. Skin heals unevenly and roughly 20 to 30 percent of pigment lifts during healing. At BrowLady this session is included in your microblading price.
12 to 18 months: colour boost for microblading and nano brows.
18 to 24 months: refresh for powder brows, ombre powder brows and combo brows.
2 to 3 years: refresh for permanent eyeliner, lip blush and lip liner.
Book the refresh while you can still see the shape clearly. A soft, faded brow takes one shorter session to bring back. A brow that has broken up into patches and shifted tone takes colour correction, which costs more and sometimes needs two visits. Our microblading touch-up guide walks through what happens at each stage, and the before and after gallery shows healed results at different points in the cycle.
How do you make permanent makeup last longer?
The first two weeks decide more than the next two years.
Follow your aftercare exactly for 14 days. No swimming, no saunas, no heavy sweating, no picking at flakes. Pulling a scab pulls the pigment underneath it.
Wear SPF on the treated area every day once healed, including winter and cloudy days.
Keep acids and retinoids away from the pigment. Apply them from the cheekbones down if your routine allows.
Use a gentle, oil free cleanser around the area. Oil based removers break pigment down over time, particularly on eyeliner.
Book your refresh on schedule instead of waiting for it to look wrong.

FAQs
How long does an eyebrow tattoo last without any touch-up?
A 3D eyebrow tattoo lasts two to three years without maintenance, though the shape softens and the tone can shift warm or cool after the first year. Skipping the six week perfecting session cuts that noticeably.
Does permanent makeup ever go away completely?
Usually not entirely. Most pigment breaks down over three to five years, but a faint shadow can remain, especially with darker or older pigments. Complete removal needs saline or laser treatment across several sessions.
How long do nano brows last compared to microblading?
Nano brows last about 18 months to three years, while microblading lasts 12 to 18 months. Nano uses a machine and a single needle, which places pigment more evenly and holds better on oily or combination skin.
How long does microblading last on oily skin?
Often closer to 8 to 12 months. Excess sebum blurs the fine hair strokes and pushes pigment out faster. Powder brows or combo brows are the better choice for oily skin and typically hold 18 to 24 months.
